Our proposal story at Sunset Cliffs

Atlanta + Coastal Georgia + The Southeast

let's be friends!

I’ve been so excited to share this story with all of you because literally everything that happened on this wonderful day was a dream come true! I’m so thankful to have people in my life who love me so dearly and cheer me on. Thank you for your well wishes and congratulations!

This is the story of how Garrett proposed. And it was perfect.

The day started at the San Diego Zoo.

I have a not-so-secret obsession with elephants, so I’m guessing that’s why Garrett took me there first. When Garrett asked me to come to San Diego with him, I was so excited. For many reasons, but the zoo was definitely one of them! Like most of our adventures together, our trip to San Diego had been very chill. We chose what to do as each day went on with no real plans, so when I found out that Garrett had already purchased tickets for the zoo, I should have been suspicious! However, Garrett is like that. I thought he was just surprising me because he knew how badly I wanted to go!

We went early so the Zoo was mostly hours, and I got to gush over the beautiful elephants as long as I wanted with no one around. How unbelievably special.

After the zoo, Garrett took me to lunch at Balboa Park. Balboa Park is beautiful! There are museums, botanical gardens, tours and so much history. After lunch, we strolled around the park and then wandered over to La Jolla Cove, one of Garrett’s favorite spots in the area.

Before our trip, Garrett told me stories about the cove and how seals come up on the beach and hang out with the people. Every bit of that is true, it’s unreal! So Garrett and I laid out on the beach and watched the seals play. We climbed the rocks and even went through a little cave. It was magical and one of the coolest things I’ve ever done!

We had plans to go to dinner in the harbor for some famous Mai Tai’s, so we went back to the hotel to get ready. On the way to the restaurant, Garrett suggested that we drive over to Sunset Cliffs since we had time to kill. I secretly wanted to go there because as a photographer, Sunset Cliffs sounds freaking amazing! But I never actually mentioned it to Garrett. As we drove, we kept passing all of the parking spots, driving quickly. I was starting to get aggravated and telling him to “just pull over at any one of them” so we could look out over the cliffs!

He finally made it to the parking lot he wanted, and we got out of the car and walked around. As we were walking, he set his sights on a tree in the distance and said, “Let’s make it over there!” It made no sense. Why this tree? That should have been clue number 45857.

It all became clear once we reached the spot. Garrett began telling me how much he loved me and how important I was to him. Everything made sense – the perfect day, why we were really there – and my heart started beating a faster…Then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!!! It was the best moment of my life!

Garrett is the most amazing man I’ve ever met, and I can’t describe how excited I am to spend the rest of my life with him! It’s been a long journey to get to this point, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Garrett is kind, strong, compassionate, thoughtful and smart. He’s straight out of my 16 year old diary (just kidding, I never kept one!), and I’m the luckiest gal in the world.

Thank you to Adam Herrington for being there to capture some of my favorite images of us. You sneaky dude!
